Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washington Counties

The Western Maryland region is defined for the purposes of this Reality Check exercises as the four western most counties in Maryland: Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett. Development and population change in these counties ranges from the high growth experienced in recent decades in Frederick County to the continuing loss of population in mountainous Allegany County. Frederick County, where growth appears to be coming from Montgomery and other Washington-Baltimore corridor counties, could have been placed in the Central Maryland region for this exercise, but was grouped with the Western Maryland counties in recognition of the influence growth there is beginning to have on neighboring Washington County and even on eastern Allegany County.
